About Me

I am a mother and grandmother in my late fifties who has worked in education for all of my working life. I am convinced that we should never stop learning because, in the words of Albert Einstein,

“When you stop learning, you start dying.”

After practicing Pilates for a number of years, I was so convinced of the benefits that I trained with FutureFit to become a teacher of mat Pilates with additional specialisms in pre- and post-natal exercise and Pilates for common orthopaedic conditions.

I have always been keen on sport and exercise and, although I can never claim to be the most talented sportsperson, my aim was always to have a go. As I have become older and wiser, I have realised that we need to keep strong and mobile in order to maintain our bodies and our ability to live a fulfilled life (for instance, did you realise that if you lose the ability to stand on one leg over the age of 40 if you don’t practice regularly?) Over the years, time takes its toll on our muscles and bones, particularly if we are unaware of how to move efficiently and how our muscles work in partnership with one another to support our bodies effectively. We can so easily undermine our own health and wellbeing without knowing it.

If you would like to learn more about Pilates, I have classes starting on 8th and 9th October in Scarisbrick, Hesketh Bank and Southport which cater for men and women of all ages and levels of fitness. No one is too old or too unfit to start making improvements. Pilates exercises can be modified, adapted and progressed to make sure that everyone gains from a session.

My classes are deliberately kept small, with a maximum of 8 clients per session, so that I can support each individual with correct posture, alignment and movement throughout each of the exercises.

About Joseph Pilates

As a child, Joseph Pilates suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. In his determination to overcome these ailments, he studied different approaches to exercise. He became fascinated by the Greek ideal of balance in body, mind and spirit and he began to develop his own exercise system based on this concept. He and his wife opened their first body conditioning gym in New York City in the 1920s.

There he worked with dancers from the New York ballet, who rehearsed in the same building, to support them with maintaining their bodies in optimum working condition. Nowadays, the 34 classical Pilates exercises which he devised can be performed as originally intended but have also been modified in order to make them accessible to anyone who wishes to improve the way their body functions.
